Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships

Since 1996, the Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) has been a beacon of hope for students in the Rio Grande Valley, providing essential financial assistance for higher education. Founded by local civic and business leaders with a noble mission of breaking barriers to higher education for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, VAMOS has evolved into a transformative force, empowering students to pursue their dreams and build a brighter future.

Through various programs and initiatives, VAMOS provides students with the tools, resources, and support needed to succeed academically and beyond. The program’s mission revolves around the belief that education is the key to unlocking potential and breaking the cycle of poverty. With support from donors and sponsors, VAMOS awards four-year renewable scholarships to high school graduating seniors who demonstrate academic merit and leadership potential, many of whom are first-generation college students. These scholarships provide life-changing opportunities for students and have far-reaching impacts that uplift entire communities. It’s a chance to change the course of their life and seize new possibilities that were once unthinkable.

To date, VAMOS has awarded over $25 million in scholarships to more than 1,250 students, thanks to the generous support of donors and sponsors. In addition to the scholarship, the program gives students the support and resources needed to succeed in college and a unique mentoring component in which students are paired with mentors who provide support and maintain communication throughout the student’s college journey. The graduation rate among VAMOS students is 96%, and they attend universities locally, across Texas, and out of state.

By investing in the education and future of students from the Rio Grande Valley, VAMOS fosters a skilled and empowered workforce, driving economic growth. VAMOS alumni become leaders and role models in their communities, stay connected by getting involved in fundraising efforts, and mentor and support the next generation of students facing similar challenges.
